In summer 2010 the Bulgarian State Enterprise "Radioactive Waste" (SERAW) called for tenders for the preparation of technical plans for a national near surface repository for short-lived low and intermediate level radioactive waste in Bulgaria and for an intermediate safety assessment report (ISAR). The consortium of WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC SPAIN SAU (project leader), DBE TECHNOLOGY GmbH, and ENRESA (Spain) was successful in the tendering process. On October 25, 2011 the corresponding contract was signed in Sofia. The Bulgarian Minister of Economy, Energy, and Tourism signed on behalf of the government.

SERWA intends to construct a near surface repository for short-lived low and intermediate level radioactive waste in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant Kozloduy.  Decommissioning waste, operational waste from other Bulgarian nuclear power plants and research reactors, and waste from hospitals and industry will be disposed in this repository.

In the course of the project all relevant documents necessary for the future licensing procedure will be prepared. Furthermore, the consortium will also provide support to the client during the subsequent licensing phase. The project duration will be 36 months with a total project financial cost of 8.1 million Euros. DBE TECHOLOGY GmbH portion of the contract amounts to 2.15 million Euros. DBE TECHNOLOGY’s scope of work includes the technical design and technical planning for both surfaces and underground facilities, planning for facility security, organisation and realization of work activities and related financial requirements, operational waste management, investigation of environmental impacts and monitoring, and both operational and long-term safety.
